British Horse Society - Project 2026 - Repealed

On 16th February 2022 DEFRA announced that the Government intends to repeal the 2026 cut-off date in England.  What this means is that there is no longer a deadline, however this does not mean the end of Project 2026; to the contrary it has highlighted the value of the work we are all doing in extending the equestrian network and providing extensive and safe off-road riding.  So you can still play your part in ensuring your bridleways and byways are officially recorded.

The British Horse Society has made the Project 2026 open to all, members and non members. Here you can check routes you ride and, if not an official bridleway or byway, take the first steps to getting this recorded before it's too late.

It's easy to use and mark up the route and add comments; and if you feel like helping further, add some evidence of use that you and your friends/older local people may have.

Old maps are also available free to view through this to show if the route was used historically which you can then link.

Once you record your route other people using the site can add to your evidence and the BHS Field Officers ( newly appointed to work on this for us) can also look into it with a view to claiming a new right of way for riders.

If all you wish to do is mark up your route that is fine too once it is on there it will be such a big help for everyone and a vital first step.

Full instructions are on the site and click through registration if you would like to help. Interesting reading even if you don't.
